Seconds of Today

Technically these aren't seconds from today, but whatever... While on vacation we had a big crab cake dinner with some friends. Their extended family was there as well, including a sweet little 12-year-old, Uma, who is wildly talented. She played her guitar and sang songs and, at one point, I noticed that Violet was watching her intently, brows furrowed in concentration.

"Mama! I want to do that!" She whispered to me. "You mean play the guitar?" I asked. She nodded yes. "Okay, well maybe we can get you one when we get home." I brushed her off. "No. I want to play now." She said. "I want to sing a song for everyone."

There were about fifteen adults staring her down but she loved it. She sidled up to Uma, climbed in her lap and promptly belted out a couple of original ditties. As she sang she looked everyone in the eye and was just so damn proud of herself. It was such a sweet, pure moment that I nearly ugly cried right there in front of everyone. This girl. This girl. How lucky I am that I get to be her mama.

My favorite Violet Original is below. Ima warn ya. It's catchy. I've been singing "When I was doin' math I used my paper. I used my paa--aaper" all morning long.

Hahahaaaaaa!!! She's fucking terrible!! This is the crappiest guitar playing I've ever heard!! What a loser!

I wish more people would get to see my five-year-old's impromptu concerts. Alas, he is of the shy variety and will only rock out to his parents but, man, it's cute. He goes all out.
Love Violet's confidence and originality...rock on!

I"m thinking the apple has not fallen far from the tree. Get that girl a mini guitar! Serge can give her lessons!

With a rock and roll star for a father it's clear she already has the bug. One things for sure, she ain't gonna be no 'shrinking' Violet when she grows up :-)

That was adorable, what great confidence she has! My daughter has guitar lessons, start them young they soak it up so quickly!

@ Xmastime... Did you struggle with persistent bedwetting past the age of five? Did you have an obsession with fire starting? Were you cruel to animals?

LOVE IT! I was always a back of the pack athlete but dreamed of being good, but afraid to really try and possibly fail and look foolish, so it was safer to just be the comfortable non-spotlight person. But my kid is a gifted athlete -- and does ridiculous stuff (like dunking) and makes it look so easy. It kind of makes your heart stop when you see your kid do something you couldn't (or wouldn't) do. I feel the same way -- like how did he possibly come from me! But so happy he did.

Oh, that is seriously adorable...and sure makes a momma proud, I'll bet! She is so cute.

My daughter has a sparkly pink guitar (with amp and everything), and even though she can't play it, she has a ball strumming that thing and singing. You should TOTALLY get one for Violet...she's a rockstar!

I think that is my most favorite of all favorite things! So adorable! I love how she strums at the end of the song. She "gets" the way it all goes down. Man I could just eat her with a spoon....Grandma talk...
