I put together a project over on Babble called Created Equal based on the photographs of artist Mark Laita who has spent years exploring inequality in America.
Upon first looking at these photos what I initially see are the drastic differences in appearance.
In some cases it’s as if the subjects are different species...And yet their expressions are identical. The more you study each photo the more you realize how similar we are beneath all this extraneous bullshit.
Not only that, but you can see the child that still resides within all of us, even the most hardened and jaded among us. In the face of the stripper you see little girl she used to be, especially when positioned next to a child ballet dancer.
Or, in another case, you see the boxing legend the little boy could one day become. You see that although many of us come from completely opposite ends of the universe, there are still dozens of tiny threads that inexplicably bond us.
Mostly though, it’s shocking to see so plainly how our environment, circumstances – and our choices – transform us into such different individuals when we're all born as tiny, naked babies. Are we created equal? Do you find yourself stereotyping when looking at some of the photos?
You can check out Created Equal in its entirety over on Babble.
