What The? (And A Totally Rad Giveaway)
UPDATE: Dee B is the proud new owner of a Long Duk Dong T-shirt! Thanks for playing everyone. More reader appreciation giveaways are in the pipeline!
I don't want to freak you out or anything but we just registered Violet for Catholic pre-school.
I'll give you a minute to wipe off your monitor...
I know. Surprising. But if you click over here and read A Godless Heathen's Prayers For Her Daughter I'll explain why and also break down exactly what I want to teach my daughter about spirituality and religion. In addition to worhiping at the altar of 80's John Hughes flicks, that is... I mean, I may be a Godless heathen but I'm no dummy.
GIVEAWAY! Leave a comment (including your email) telling me your favorite John Hughes movie and you are entered to win this totally radical Long Duk Dong T-shirt, size L (based on American Apparel sizing chart.)

Sixteen Candles, because this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjh3TxOHCxE - and because this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWvAYNw8r9o - and because young John Cusack.
I think other John Hughes movies might be *better*, technically speaking, but I never identified with anyone in a movie like I identified with Sam.
Sixteen Candles by far. I used to even act out the movie with my My Little Ponies! I still watch it every time it's on, and quote it more often than I should. :)
The Breakfast Club. Because of Ally Sheedy's "snow" on her drawing. Because of Molly Ringwald's exposure to others. Because of Emilio's awesomeness. Because it brought together so many amazing and different people and changed peoples' minds.
WAIT A MINUTE!
'Vacation' because the way Chevy Chase says "RRRRrrrreal tomato ketchup, Eddie?" is epic. And the Planes Trains and Automobiles because "those aren't pillows!" still dissolves me into a fit of childish giggles.
I guess the real question should be which John Hughes movie is NOT your favorite, to which I say: Maid in Manhattan.
How could I even POSSIBLY just pick one?! John Hughes seemed to be writing the story of my life! But alas, if I had to pick, I would say Sixteen Candles.
Oh, Sixteen Candles, is by far the most superior. Though, really I love them all!
Sixteen Candles, of course. It's a little raw and unfocused compared to his later flicks, but that's partly what I love about it. It has a handcrafted feel and, absurd as it is, it better reflects my own high school experiences than, say, The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller. And Anthony Michael Hall cracks me up in every scene he's in...
I loooove The Breakast Club, but Sixteen Candles will always hold a soft spot for me because my name is also Samantha. :) it's a tradition to watch it on my birthday each year!
Some Kind Of Wonderful.... when they're getting ready for the big date at the end, and his friend gets Eric Stoltz and Amanda Jones into the museum (because his dad was the janitor) and then it finally hits him that it is Watts who he really loves!!! Love that movie!
Sixteen Candles of course! That's always been my top favorite. I've watched it so many times yet never seem to get sick of it. Where do you find shirts like that? If I don't win...I want to buy one! HA!
The Breakfast Club
Maizy from Uncle Buck...such an awesome little girl!!
16 Candles of course! but if you pick me, I'll have you send it to my sister who will rock the size L better than me :)
My favorite John Hughes movie is Some Kind of Wonderful
Pretty in Pink FTW. Who can resist Duckie?
Curly sue!
I am not sure how you pick just one, can I still win if I don't name a favorite?
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - one of my top five favorite movies of all time. :)
DEFINITELY "Sixteen Candles." Reason No. 1: Jake Ryan. Reasons 2-Infinity: She's not ugly, she's just...void. Now Carolyn, she's a wo-man! Yeah, you. Make a wish, Samantha. We don't need to let everyone know she's gotten her period! My sister's kind of out of it...just a little bit. Oh, I need a drink. The Donger need food! Lake...big lake! Hair-cutting scene. I don't want to stay here! I want to go home with you guys! Water fountain scene. The bus. Female extra terrestrial?
The Breakfast Club - watched it more times than I can count.
It's a tie between Sixteen Candles (hello, teenage angst at its finest!) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Now That's A Hard Choice To Make ! But After Due Consideration (All Of About 3 Seconds) I Would Have To Say My All Time Favorite John Hughes Movie Is "Weird Science" (A Lot Of That Is Thanks To Kelly LeBrock ! What Can I Say, I Am A Guy ! ) My Second Choice Is "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" And My Third Choice is "Flubber" ! John Wrote / Directed / Produced So Many Good Movies That I Couldn't Leave It Just One Choice !
Hands down, mine is the Breakfast Club although Sixteen Candles is a close second - I even have that same Jake Ryan shirt and wore it when I met Jen Lancaster for the first time! It looks way cuter on Violet though!
Oh, Ferris Bueller's Day Off of course. But then, they're all good aren't they!
My all time favorite John Hughes movie is Ferris Bueller's Day Off! My husband and I bought it for our kids (12 and 14 at the time) and they love it too....and an added bonus, when their teachers reference the movie in class THEY GET IT!!! Beuller......Beuller......
Sixteen Candles. Jake Ryan. Dining room table. The end.
Tie between The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. If ya hog-tied me, I guess I'd go with Sixteen Candles, because: "Dong, where is my auto-mo-bile?"
Love the Breakfast Club "Smoke up Johnny Boy" ( Monica and her brothers can recite every word of that movie) But "Some Kind of Wonderful" Is my ultimate. First time I saw it I bawled my head off when 'Watts' was leaving, sobbing, walking down the street and 'Keith' realized she was the one afterall. Watched them both at least 20 times.
I mean who can pick just one? But I think Pretty in Pink. I mean who can resist duckie besides andy?
Hi Monica, i see that your website/blog is very good. There is lot of useful information. I want to say keep it up and thank you!
LOVE love LOVE, "Pretty in Pink"... I love Ducky and the ugly prom dress she makes for herself in the end.... I could watch it a million times and still enjoy it!
We just introduced our kids to Ferris Beuller's Day Off last weekend, but I must say that my favorite has got to be Breakfast Club. I can't tell you how many times I've seen that one!
The Breakfast Club because I married my very own Bender without the freaky Dad relationship in his past. :)
The Breakfast Club. I was a communications major in college and this movie was part of the curriculum for not one but two classes. I never get tired of it or any of his movies. Thanks!
Okay, I had to get the list to be absolutely sure, My all time favorite is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Email: gcm188@msn.com
Sixteen Candles
"Married?"
"Mallied."
"Marrie??"
"Yeah. Mallied!"
One of my favorite scenes ever.
Favorite Hughes movie? "Some Kind Of Wonderful".
the Breakfast Club!
I really don't think you're going to get what you want from sending Violet to Catholic school... I think it will either have no effect because she is too young, or confuse her and give her ideas about what is 'good' / 'right' that differ from what she is hearing from you, which could lead to problems down the road. But, I have often been wrong in this life, and it is highly possible, in fact I would say almost certain, that I am projecting my own experiences (of going to a religious school and being raised in an irreligious home). Your goals are good, but theirs are different. Seriously, check out the Unitarian Universalists. They are actually invested in teaching her what you want, whereas I suspect the staff of a Catholic school are invested in teachingher something very different.
That was horribly written, I am sorry. I am beyond tired. Please look past the crappily organized points!
It has to be The Breakfast Club. It reminds me of my college days.
The breakfast club!
