My Babies

The other day Violet and Henry were sitting at the kitchen counter drinking milk. I said, "Look at you two, just a couple of kids drinking some milk." Violet's reply? "No. No! Henry's just a little baby not a kid. I'm a kid! Don't you see the difference?"

No. No I don't see the difference. You'll both be my babies forever.

Love this--so true. My kids are 16 and 10--my son is taller than I am and has been for awhile now--and I still can look at them and see the chubby toddlers they were.

My kids are 6 and 2. I still call them both my babies. And what is funny is now when I say something about my older one being my baby, my little one chimes in with, "Sunny baby too!" Or if I say something directly about Sunny being my baby, she will chime in with, "Zoe baby too!" YES!

Aw. I'm reading Chabon's Telegraph Avenue (it is a g-damn chore to read) and there is one brilliant passage I just read that made me misty-eyed:

"The little boy had wandered away from his mother, tacking across the grass toward the play structure. His mother watched him go, proud, tickled, unaware that every time they toddled away from you, they came back a little different, ten seconds older and nearer to the day when they left you for good. Pearl divers in training, staying under a few seconds longer every time."

Oh yeah, so agree with you! My 7yr daughter and 5yr old son are still both my babies, in fact both my daughter and i call my son 'baby boy' all the time. I am so glad i have thousands of photos of my kids from day one, they grow up so quick!

On an unrelated note, I made that Indian vegetable curry you linked to over the weekend and it was SOOO good. Thanks!
