What Say You?

I certainly have an opinion. Instead of my usual ramblings, I would like to hear your thoughts. On celebrity justice... Paris... Those who are famous for being famous. On The Haves and The Have Nots. On the startling fact that Paris Hilton going to jail created as much or more furor in L.A. than a famous football player suspected of murdering his wife who then fled down the freeway with a gun to his head threatening to kill himself.

Political pundits trading Iraq jabs for Paris punches. Bill O'Reilly is against Paris. Ann "The Devil's Mistress" Coulter is for her. Sean Hannity against her. Geraldo for her. Greta Van Sustern thinks she's mentally ill. Danny Bonaduce hopes she gets her ass kicked in prison. Al Sharpton is organizing an L.A. protest.

Do you feel bad for her? Did the blonde bimbo get what she deserved? Is it her parents' fault? Is the whole Paris circus just a sad commentary on our society at large? Or is watching Paris' problems and hearing reports about the vapid vixen twitching, quivering and crying out for Mommy in a courtroom better than a night at the movies? Paris, prison and the press. What say you?

Reader Comments (61)

Personally, I think she's getting what she deserves. Legally and on a karmic level. I don't feel bad for her at all. Maybe this is the best thing that will happen to her because it will help her pull her head out of her ass and figure out that she can't do whatever she wants and she's not above the law.

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

Look, I don't condone her drinking and driving, then blatantly disregarding her court order, but this case has been grossly mishandled...

In my opinion, she's been treated unfairly and suffered enough in the past 2 day's, therefore, I feel that she should be released and send home to serve out the remainder of her punishment under House Arrest.

I'm disgusted by the amount of attention this case is getting -- The real, hard news fails to get its due.

America is so fucked up!

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterS

She was driving drunk, then was pulled over several times for driving and finally ticketed for driving on a suspended license. When a judge asked her didn't she know her license was suspended she answered:
"My publicist said I could drive."
"Don't you check your mail, didn't you get a letter from the court saying your license was suspended?"
"I have people check my mail."

Please. This chick deserves to go to jail. Nobody should be released because they're having a nervous break down. How many other inmates are freaking out that their in jail? The sheriff just let's her go because she's upset and crying? That's bullshit. If she would have kept her mouth shut she would have been released for good behavior in a couple days.

Paris isn't doing anything that most Alcoholics/Addicts haven't tried, done or will do. It's just that the progression of her disease, like all young Hollywood, is on display 24/7. Don't hate the Playa, hate the game!

For the record, she's helped countless charities to raise money, that they wouldn't otherwise have. I know this to be true.

Most importantly, let's just hope that this experience forces her to grow up.

As for Karma, I wish this turmoil on no one!

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterE.

I'd like to see her gang raped in jail. Ever see the video of her throwing around the N-Word? She's a waste of a human being. Justice system or not she deserves every bit of what is happening to her.

This is on TMZ - Paris Hilton is "teetering on the brink."

Law enforcement sources have told TMZ that Hilton has been crying a lot, praying and extremely withdrawn.

Hilton is in the medical ward at Twin Towers, an L.A. County jail facility. She is in a room by herself with a glass door. For her protection, a sergeant guards the door at all times.

We're told Hilton hasn't eaten or slept since she arrived yesterday.

Sources have described her condition today as "fragile" and "despondent." One source called her "a train wreck" while another said she is "sullen and withdrawn."

We've learned her shrink, Dr. Charles Sophy, spent more than two hours with her this morning. Hilton's family can't visit today. In the medical ward, families can only visit on Sundays and Tuesdays.

I say, who cares. Suck it up. Jail sucks. Why is she getting special treatment in isolation with two hour visits from her therapist?

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJell-O

Paris Hilton is behind bars for thumbing her nose at the judge, not because of the DUI. If she had been to court on time and acted responsibly she never would have been sent to jail. Because she acted above the law and entitled, the judge threw the book at her.

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterSela

"The Click By" is entertaining and thought-provoking for so much more than two catty girls going at it."

No....It's really not. It's just like the Paris debacle. Junk food. A trainwreck. Highly watchable, very distracting. but ultimately empty.

June 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterE.

The media attention is totally out of proportion - I'm not entertained by anything to do with Ms Hilton, including this.

But the amount of attention makes it even more important that she is not able to escape "justice" for here disrespect of the court. Myabe she is reaping the whirlwind of her own publicity machine, who knows, who cares?

All that said, it's hard not to think that for someone who has lived so much of their life in guilt-free seduction of the public's attention, she has cracked remarkably easily when things did not go her way.

To each his own.. At least you're entertained.

June 9, 2007 | Registered CommenterThe Girl Who...

I have mixed thoughts about it. To be honest, she does deserve punishment for what she did. BUT, all of the hype about it, the media constantly surrounding her, the circus that all of this has become... it's ridiculous.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterthethinker

I think she definitely deserves what she gets. Just because she is a pseudo-celebrity doesn't mean she should get any better treatment. She and the rest of these attention whores always act above the law.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJB

My considered opinion is that I don't know enough about her or her situation to make any sort of statement that isn't 2 parts ignorance, 3 parts status envy and 10 parts my own projection based on where I am in my life.

Watching Paris Hilton is like watching a car crash in slow-motion and it doesn't make anyone better for spectating on the sidelines eating popcorn and taking bets.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterMaxine

To be honest with you, I was very entertained by CL's version, but yours feels completely defensive in nature. And, you may well have every right to be, but I wish you'd just own and proclaim it as that instead of regularly insisting you don't care and have so moved on and were never threatened by her and that you're putting it forth as a comment on something deep about current social mores instead of as a flat-out retaliation. I keep waiting for the part where you fully acknowledge your own fucked up manipulative shit (you know, the really human part) instead of just vaguely alluding to or seemingly sugar coating it. I don't mean to be so harsh, it's just that I think your usual honesty, self-deprecation and emotional rawness is the best thing about your writing specifically and this blog generally yet ironically find those things very lacking in the Click By.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterE.

I think she's getting what she deserves. Her parents raised an idiot and they all think waving money at it will make the problem go away.

I just wish the "news" would focus on something else, cause Paris isn't news.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

So many people are complaining that Paris gets attention for doing nothing, and yet- they are doing just that. Giving more attention to perpetuate the situation.

The judge was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. He was (overly, in my opinion) harsh and there are people complaining, but if he had been more lenient then that would have been frowned upon as well. So many people drive on suspended licenses and do not get sentenced to 45 days. Most get nothing more then a slap on the wrist. That said, she was wrong. She was sentenced and she should accept her punishment.

As for being in the medical ward- she sounds very depressed. It would be cruel and unusual punishment to just throw her to the dogs. Is she faking? Possibly but as none of us, presumably, are in a position to examine her in person then none of us are qualified enough to judge that.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterLe Sigh

i agree with E...
The Click By doesn't come off as being honest to me. i actually feel more sympathy for Caroline with each entry! so i think the way you're recounting it isn't working well in telling your side of the story. be brutally honest! i think it will show you in a better light...

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterlc

Paris Hilton comes across as a rich, spoiled brat. The judge obviously agreed when he threw the book at her, not impressed with her privileged excuses of not reading or knowing about the notices the court mailed to her and claiming to rely on her publicist (whom she later fired and rehired), rather than her "crack" team of lawyers, about whether she legally could drive. It looks to me like she has been "working it" in jail in typical drama queen fashion, right down to having a 3-day long tantrum that has now resulted in some allegedly diagnosed psych condition. I think the judge views this as a farce and was irritated that the Hiltons again acted above the law, when the sheriff let Paris out without court order and when Paris wanted to dial in her court appearance. The problem is that she appears more intent in enrolling others to feel sorry for her, rather than taking away something from the experience. Remember Martha?

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterSaffoula

I think that the whole clebrity adulation culture is pathetic.

Who cares that a stupid bimbo is sent to jail because she thought she was above the law?

Let's concentrate on the real issues, like Iraq and Afghanistan, like dodgy politicians, like gun crime and drugs and all the things that are wrong with this world, and ignore the people like Miss Hilton who is famous for having an extremely rich daddy and for an internet porn video, and hope they crawl back under the rock from whence they came.

I really do believe that the whole 'celebrity culture' rubbish is something that has been deliberately orchestrated to take our minds off the important issues.

"Keep them entertained with details of the latest 'celebrity' rehab, then they'll forget that their kids get a crap education" seems to be the order of the day....

And yet, we fall for it. People watch rubbish like Big Brother in their millions, spend hours queuing up to get the latest fashions supposedly designed by Kate Moss, devour newspapers for any mention of (insert famous name here) and their latest drug/drink dependency or boy/girl friend, and ignore the REAL issues....

As for the people who have hijacked this thread to discuss something completely different, why don't you just consume excrement and expire....

This is meant to be a discussion on specific issues, not a chance to drag up stuff that has been done to death in the past and is completely unrelated to the question at hand

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterDamien

Thank you Damien, you couldn't be more right... I'll address this one more time. Here. And maybe at the very end of The Click By I'll leave comments open so you can tell me what you think.

*COMMERCIAL BREAK*

As far as The Click By goes - of course it sounds defensive - it was written at the height of her blog as a response to her story. That's the reason I wrote the fucker. Because I was angry at how much she misrepresented my husband, me, our marriage, her role as an instigator.. While she claimed to have recounted events with the whole truth, she cherry plucked incidents from a tree and reorganized them so most of my actions looked completely unprovoked. But in every communication I had with her over the course of two years I was responding to a behavior of hers that was directed at my husband and later myself. I am being brutally honest and I will recount the part where I turn into a complete assface.. but that doesn't come until later. And yes, I'm trying to restrain myself a bit. I don't want to infect my current opinion of Caroline on this part of the storyline because at that particular juncture the girl hadn't really bothered me yet. I simultaneously felt bad for her and was moderately annoyed. Because you know how the situation ultimately went nuclear, perhaps this part of the story feels restrained to you. But I'm trying to write exactly how I felt as each incident occurred.

now back to regular programming...

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterThe Girl Who...

Give Paris a break! Whether she's a twat or not her sentence was unfair. Nobody I know is sentenced to 45 days in jail for driving on a suspended license. This judge is no better than the douche in the Anna Nicole case and is just trying to make a name for himself!

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterToby

I feel sorry for her and think she is being treated harshly because she is a very rich celebrity. She is being unfairly punished and, compared to the only life she knows, this is cruel and unusual. Meanwhile, the woman who murdered her husband get 210 days.

You may think ste's stupid and spoiled but she isn't a threat to society and if they want her off the streets then give her house arrest.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterjls

I can't stand Paris Hilton. She is a menace to society and has probably done more damage to the minds of little girls than pot dealers ever could. As far as her sentence, I don't care. But I can say I'm enjoying what has gone on so far.

Monica, I think you're doing a great job writing The Click By. Although I know it gets crazy, I think that so far both of you come off accurately. Caroline - a bitter ex that is having a hard time letting go, You - an insecure new wife unsure how to react. It's a great set-up. Keep going! I think the story is unbelievable and I can't wait for the juicy parts.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterGemma

Since this whole Paris topic has been/is being done to death by pretty much every blog and media outlet (this is not a judgment. It would be difficult for me to stand in judgment of this kind of thing as I'm an unrepentant addict of celebrity gossip), I've got a comment about The Click By as well. I tried for a while to figure what made those entries so different from her regular ones, and I think I know: everything else on here is written for whoever wants to read it, while The Click By is clearly written for an audience of one. It's a sharp stick right to the eye of Caroline. This is also not a judgment, as in Monica's shoes, whether or not I said it outright, I'd be writing for an audience of one as well.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterR.

As an attorney, I believe that the judge did exactly what he should have: he administered justice. When all is said and done, Paris was in his court room because of her criminal actions. The end. Move on.

As a fellow human being, I feel sorry for her. I put a lot of the blame upon her parents. Maybe if they had taken the time to actually teach her how to be a responsible, intelligent, moral woman, she wouldn't constantly find herself wallowing amongst the pigs. What a waste of a human life.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterM

I realize that this is the wrong place to address it, but maybe you won't mind since I am not intentionally starting trouble. Did you delete The Surge from Caroline's mailing list or did Surge delete himself from her mailing list? Though your recent entries says that he deleted himself, I seem to recall that in her version of the story she thought he had deleted her, but you ended up emailing her and admitting that you had actually deleted her. I could be recalling the story wrong, so please correct me if I am wrong.

Anyone who tells other commenters to eat shit and die because they draw a comparison between two subjects posted back to back deeply needs anger management and extensive therapy. Monica, either drop this subject entirely or please do not get on a high horse about people who have taken the time to read it and then wish to comment. It's actually quite insulting to your readers.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterE.

I've always been curious as to why you leave the comments off on most of your posts. Having seen how everyone with this post is going off on a completely unrelated tangent and asking/commenting on something other than the intended question, I am no longer confused.

It must be hard putting up with people permanently questioning every aspect of what has happened in the past and feeling they can judge you on things that have happened in the past, based purely on what they have read on-line.

No wonder you usually leave the comments off, as I'm sure this is something that you want to forget about and move on with your life.

I for one will never comment on that period of your life, for the simple reason that I have never met either you or the other party involved, so feel I am not entitled to cast judgement on it.

If only other people could be so enlightened.

Sure, read what's posted up here, and elsewhere for that matter. Feel entertained by what is, in fairness, some excellent writing by both parties.

Then behave like an adult, and say to yourself....

"That was an interesting read. Now, how about I go and get some work done and stop living my life by making judgements about other peoples"

You will also please note that at no point have I actually used any expletives, although I will concede that your translation was correct. I'd appreciate it if you could extend the same courtesy....

I'm appalled by the attorneys comment. "A waste of life".

We're all put on this earth to learn our own series of lessons -- We each have obstacles to overcome.

The real question we should be asking ourselves is: I'm doing my part to make this world a better place?

I'm doing my very best to raise a confident/kind teenage girl, one I hope keep off of drugs. Which leads me to Gemma's comment, are you kidding me with that comment?! That's one of the most ignorant statements that I've ever heard!

Vanity is only a part of life, but having to live with addictions is life long...

I'd love to see a 1/10 of the focus on Paris' case be directed toward our President and the mess that this country is in.

Finally, I cannot believe all the people who dare to come on your blog on behalf of CL and continue to act like highschool girls. Now that, to me, is a waste of energy...

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterS.

Get over yourself, Damien. I am thoroughly unimpressed.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterE.

And I'm not going to get myself embroiled in a public row with someone who hasn't got the decency to let people know who they are...

So any further comments you make will be ignored by me. All I was actually doing with my last post was pointing out your previous mistakes.

Sorry if that caused offence, as I know it must be tough to sit there in your anonymous little world directing criticism at people who are undeserving of said criticism when it is directed back at you.

You've given me a good laugh, Damien. And pointed out zero "mistakes." but made explicit your own complete hypocrisy.

I generally turn off comments here because most posts degenerate into negativity. As this one has. I don't wanna monitor comments so it's easier to leave them off.

I turn off comments on The Click By because the topic has been discussed to death.. Here, on Caroline's blog, on several other blogs and message boards and I'm quite honestly not interested in anyone's opinion about it. Caroline has her version, I have mine. I understand the situation from every angle and I defy you to make a comment I haven't already thought, read or received via email. I'm okay with whatever you think about any of it and I'm certainly not concerned with Caroline's opinion. I initially thought this would be one of those confusing, drawn out tales that only interest those involved. So I'm more interested in the fact that y'all are interested in reading the story and what you think about the writing. Not the actual facts themselves. But - perhaps you should reserve your judgement until you finish reading The Click By.

"Is the whole Paris circus just a sad commentary on our society at large?"

bingo. of course she cried, twitched and cried out for mommy. she's the ultimate spoiled brat - the only day of work she's ever done in her life was for a REALITY TELEVISION SHOW - who's been handed everything she ever wanted and allowed to coast through life without breaking a sweat. of course, when she finds out there are actually consequences for her actions - actions that include drinking and driving, which, last i checked, is pretty fucking dangerous - she immediately resorts to her instincts: let mommy fix it.

i have zero sympathy for paris hilton, the same way i have zero sympathy for anyone who gets their ass thrown in jail for driving drunk and endangering other motorists, bike riders and pedestrians. living her life in the public eye has further enabled her to enjoy a life of privilege most of us will never comprehend, and i'm supposed to have pity on her because that same life in the public eye, along with her own reckless, careless behavior, came back to bite her in the ass? no thanks. fuck paris hilton.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterAimee

Oh. Also. I just read The Click By straight through and cannot understand why anyone would feel bad for that girl. If they do it's a testament to your unbiased writing. How do you feel bad for someone who jumped between two guys for a year and finally freaked when one of them truly found love and decided to move on? She proclaimed her profound love for her boyfriend about two million times on her snotty little blog. But at the same time she was pestering your husband. Feel sorry? I don't think so!

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterAimee

Monica,

When it comes to Carolyn, and I didn't read the ClickBy as the dirty details don't interest me, don't get mad, get even.

I once found myself in the position of competing against another woman for the attention of my husband in cyberspace, a very weird space in deed. But I ignored it, for the most part, and fought back. I think I won as he seems to have lost interest in her.

But she tried so hard to seduce him. She stripped on her web cam. She wrote him dirty stories, had virtual sex. Offered to meet him in person. But when it was all over and clear that he had no real interest in her, to restore my self equilibrium, I got even.

So a bit of advice, ignore Carolyn. And then strike when you are ready. But your story, as you pointed out in the prior entry, is not that unique and hence, not that interesting. Unless you can provide us with a surprise ending, which would require either a threesome or a dead body, preferably the Serge's after you discover a secret continued liaison between him and Carolyn in which you are truly the innocent victim.

Me, well, since the poor dear seemed to be so desparate to meet a new man, I ran an ad for her. Her passions?

Blow jobs and borscht. Oh yeah, and virtual sex.

June 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterIsabelle Dolce

I think it's a tribute to Serge's sexiness that this woman remains so interested in life (his music, his wife, what his fans think) for so many years after he broke up with her. Even after she apparently moved in with another man. Serge must be a tough one to get over!

See, this is the kind of thing that is makes no sense. If you understand the situation from every angle and have zero interest in anyone's opinion about it then why post the story? And, why were you so distraught by Caroline's blog? Or, is the idea that in 4 short months you've completely recovered from that experience.? If, so wow--impressive. I'm also curious why only a couple of weeks ago you said you welcomed anyone who might be able to help you make sense of it all.

Just stop already! Dear God! What do you want from me? I can't quite figure out your motivation. You're starting to sound more obssessed than either Caroline or I ever was.

Don't like me? Go away! Think I'm full of shit? Stop reading! I'm not a senator, you didn't vote for me, I don't owe you an explanation for anything on this blog and shame on you for fucking up comments. I'm a normal human being with vascillating opinions and a wide fucking range of emotions - just ask my husband.

I'm posting The Click By because I love to write and this blog is where I post what I write. Period. Understand? This story came pouring out of me because I wrote it at a time when I was very upset about what she wrote about me and my husband on her blog. In the months since she finished her melodramatic little blog I've managed to pull myself from the muck and mire, collect my thoughts and view the entire situation for what it was. What was it? Bullshit. All of it. Silly drama that she whipped up into a firestorm.

As far as The Click By is concerned, you are invited to read but not comment. The comments off means that I am no longer interested in anyone's negative opinion on what an ass they think that Caroline is or what an idiot they think I am. I think there has been enough of that. I'm over Caroline, yes. But the situation will be one I marvel over for years to come, a story I tell for a long, long time.

Monica,
I'd like to try to answer the Paris questions you posed. Do I feel bad for her...not for a minute. Did she get what she deserved...you bet. Is it her parent's fault...for raising her to act the fool yes, for the DUI no. Is the Paris circus a sad commentary on our society...it is insane where we have sunk to as a society. I love "celebrity news" and following the fashion trends as much as the next girl, but it's not the be all and end all. I absolutely cannot STAND when someone is famous for being famous, ie: Paris, Nicole Ritchie and a slew of "reality stars". Please! When I think of all the fantastic actors on broadway making a fraction of the $$ these stupid girls make, oh I could be sick. Since I was so kind as to actually answer the questions you asked and not make 10,000 comments about "The Click By" (which I love), I'd like to have permission to tell "E" to leave you the hell alone. It's your goddamn life and you don't owe any of us an explanation on why you are writing the Click By or what your motivation is. It's your story to tell any way you see fit!

Shame on me? Really? If you really feel that I have done something so horrible by becoming intellectually invested in what you write, questioning some confusing inconsistencies, and offering some basic advice (I'm actually a professional editor, for what its' worth), then you may have a very tough time out there in the world of publishing.

I think you have real talent and that if you love to write you should, no matter what. But obviously if you already wrote The Click By months ago, posting it now has nothing to do with that love, with the art of it. I think your readers appreciate your honesty and self-examination and that when it comes to this topic your defensiveness and need to prove you are above it all significantly detracts from what makes the subject compelling. You can delete this or tell me to (essentially) screw off again; that's fine and obviously your call, but seriously Monica, do you really think the world needs to talk more about Paris Hilton? There are only about 50,000 other places on the net one can engage in that discussion. My totally unsolicited advice to you, is to dig a little deeper and go where your afraid to--your best work will inevitably be found there.

I was sitting in the grass one night, completely fucked up out of my mind, six weeks after I turned 21. I'd pulled over because I realized I was too drunk to drive and tried to phone a friend to pick me up.

However, a cop was at the gas station and saw me sitting in the grass. He confronted me and arrested me for drunk driving because even though he hadn't seen me driving he had reasonable suspicion to believe that I was.

Yeah. That kind of shit happens here in Texas.

At the time, I was in the military, so I did the only thing I could do: take in the ass and not complain. I did everything the Court told me to and that included not driving on my suspended license.

Why homegirl should be exempt for breaking the rules is a bizarre concept; very bizarre.
