Free to be Me

As one who constantly worries what others think about me, I find New York City to be liberating on several fronts. I'm indulging myself in every whim, every fancy, every eccentric behavior that would have me branded a nutter back in Utah.

Because most people don't own vehicles the oddballs are forced to traverse the sidewalk with the rest of us. Their loud chattering to themselves increases my chances of not being noticed. At home the wackos are all hidden in vehicles. If you took a bus in Salt Lake City, you can bet you'll be riding along with someone eager to share a conspiracy theory, a booger, whatever.

In Brooklyn I can clatter down the sidewalk in my lingerie and cowboy boots singing the theme song to 'Growing Pains' if I took a notion to and would most likely not merit a second glance. Street tough New Yorkers would barely cast jaded eyes in my direction. The loonies are among us and I bask in the anonymity of it all. I trot happily among them, grateful for the attention they deflect.

And so, I find myself indulging in all manner of behavior I never would have considered prior to The Great Escape. Last evening found me singing to Max as we ambled down the sidewalk, catching the last sun rays on the chilly October evening.

"Maxing Maxer.. Mommers loves the Maxie boy. He's DELLLLIIIICIOUS! LICIOUS! LISHUS! HE'S LISHUS.. The lishing lisher of lishus lane! Maxie has moxie..." I trilled into the twilight. At the end of my impromptu ditty I giggled to myself, picked the pj bottoms I've been wearing for three days out of my bum, adjusted my scarf and flip-flopped my way home.

Wonderful! :) What a vivid picture you paint and how wonderfully liberating! I'm sure Max was thrilled to bits too.

Too funny! Were they cartoon pj's?

I sing to my cat too. Her name is Lady Day but I call her Lady Momma, or sometimes Lady Mala (mala means bad in spanish) Sometimes i annoy my roomates with ballads of her name, but mostly I sing Tom Jone's..."What;s new pussy cat..whoaooooo, whoaoooo, whoaooooo!" :)

i'm shocked my poor kittens even respond to their *given* names as each one has at least 10 other names. poor tyrone's nicknames run the gamut from tyrone-runner to fighter-cat-rcoky-boy (sad tail with a happy ending--he was in the ER for 3 days a few weeks ago. ty beat the odds, tough one he is).
