Food For Thought

Have you ever tasted something you've spent half your life declaring you hate? Something you absolutely refuse to eat, and it turns out you love said something? Maybe a tragic incident involving the particular item in question spurred the dislike. Maybe dad made you sit sullenly at the dinner table until you 'finish those goddamn peas'! Now you hate peas. Well, it happened to me today. Not a tragic incident. A food awakening.

If you know anything about me, you know I hate peaches. I was raised on welfare and canned peaches. Nothing against grandman's canning capabilities, (she makes a mean jam), but it got to the point where I'd rather go hungry than slurp down another slimey, brownish, peach like blob afloat in that clear, sticky liquid of unknown origin.

The Surge loves him some peaches. He was in the kitchen this very morning, slicing and dicing to make for a tasty cereal topping.
"Here, try this." Before this unsuspecting victim knows it, she's got a mouthful of peach.
"What the..." I garble around the flavorsome fruit. The Surge is standing there, smiling, eyebrows raised in knowing anticipation of my reaction.

AND... It's good. No, it's grrrreat! as Tony the Tiger would say about his breakfast of choice. Sweet, succulent, juicy. Not too mushy, not too hard. What'dya know? Peaches are good. I wonder which other foods I allegedly hate I'm missing out on.

...hey, I did the same thing with steak...I’ll just say I had a bit of a childhood trauma involving a med-rare steak with BIG veins and leave it at that...didn't eat steak again for over 20 years...until it was the only thing being served at a business dinner…and I’m a hungry boy...so I tried it...now I LUV it!

Before I got pregnant I hated corn. I wouldn't eat it as a side dish or on the cob. I could stomach it if it was in a soup or stew.

While pregnant I couldn't get enough of vegetables like corn. I now will eat corn.

On another note, I have hated spaghettio's since I was a kid. My brother would gross me out because he would just open the can of spaghettio's with the can opener and stick a spoon in it and eat them straight out the can. I hated the smell of them as well.

About a week ago there was very little food in the house, but there was spaghettio's in the cabinet because my daughter loves them. I decided to go ahead and try them but the only way I can eat them is adding some cheese to it. They aren't so bad, but I still don't think I could eat them without adding the cheese to it.

How fun! And I LOVE spaghettios and I DO eat them straight from the can! I did it last week (Yes, I'm 35 years old!)

My unexpected food love was okra. Hated it growing up, now a total fave. Spinach too. I love it fresh, frozen and also STRAIGHT FORM A CAN. I know! Gross! But I actually do try my hated foods every once in a while, just to "be sure." Still hate: peaches (I do!) and melon and most every flavor of ice cream (I can only manage the chocolate of chocolates and only when it is icy cold.)

Love canned spinach and hate ice cream. I'm a freak, I know.

Raw tomatoes. Wouldn't touch them until I turned 28, now I eat them daily.

I always hated eggs benedict. It just looked "wrong", all slimey and shit. But after a night of drinking, my friend got up early and made us all breakfast. Who was I to turn my nose up at her culinary efforts, so, I slide a forkfull into my and...."WOW"!!!!!!!!!!! Thats all I can say.

I always, always thought I hated BBQ potato chips. I hated the smell, the thought of them - everything. Then one very drunk, very fun, night, I sat down, put my hand in a bag and ate a BBQ chip. And I found heaven, in chip-form. But I still won't admit to it, to most people, because for so long that was my "thing" - the girl who hates BBQ sauce/flavored things. But I sneak them any chance I can get :)

I used to love salad. And there were these prepared salads you could buy at Ralphs. My dad bought one for me when I was in seventh grade and he put it on a plate. And I was eating it and I felt this crunch in my mouth. A dry, not salad crunch. But I swallowed. And then I looked a little closer at my plate and realized that I had eaten half of a filthy snail!!!!
I keep trying, but I can never finish a salad.

a worthy topic, but i seriously doubt anything can ever change my mind about liver and onions. the only reason my mom ever made that for dinner was because my dad loved the stuff--and he was the only one who did, out of a family of four. one time she made chicken livers with chicken liver gravy; and that woman does NOT know how to make gravy, it was more like paste. i went to bed hungry that night, and gladly so.

i have changed my mind about meatloaf, though. there's nothing quite like a cold meatloaf sandwich with ketchup.
